Men’s Theology

Men’s Theology August 27, 2012

Three years ago, in the fall of 2009, we launched amen’s discipleship ministry called the “Theology Breakfast.” My goal was totrain men, not for fulltime ministry, but for godliness. For spiritualleadership in their homes and in our church. For the glory of God and the joyof all peoples.

Before we launched, I was hoping for five guys. Twentyturned out, week after week, at 6 in the morning(!!), to go hard after God inHis word. For two years we kept at it, studying basic Bible doctrine onesubject at a time. Then last year we zeroed in on the Old Testament inparticular, and we took an in-depth look at the theology of Genesis-Malachi.This year, our fourth year running, we’re turning our lens on the NewTestament. Here’s an outline of our plan:

WHO IS INVITED: Faithful men of any age who are interested in learning what theScriptures teach so they can live it out and pass it on to others. Our modelcomes from 2 Timothy 2:2, where Paul exhorts Timothy: “What you have heard fromme in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be ableto teach others also.” That’s our goal: to produce a host of men who aretrained in the teachings of Scripture, who will then convey their faith toothers.

TEXT BOOK: Our text, as always, is the Bible. Our secondary text is Magnifying God inChrist: A Summary of New Testament Theology, by Thomas Schreiner. Why thisbook? The New Testament covers a vast and varied terrain, and this book willhelp us take in the whole landscape. One reader gave this commendation: “Apartfrom the Bible, no other book has had the effect on me that this book has inthe last 2-3 years.” As for the author, Tom Schreiner is a diligent scholar, areadable writer, a humble pastor, and, I’m pleased to say, a personal friend.

MEETING TIMES:  Our study will last from September through May, with a break forChristmas. As in previous years, we’ll offer the discussion twice for eachportion of the reading—an early morning meeting (on Friday) and an eveningmeeting (on Wednesday), every other week.

FIRST MEETING:  Wednesday, September 5, 7-8:30 PM  or  Friday,September 7, 6-7:30 AM

Won’t you join us this year? We’d love to have you!
